Parts Builder helps people identify and source parts for vehicle restoration projects, and runs the Electrical Academy training course. This page describes what the site collects, where it goes, and how to have it removed. It is operated by Partsbuilder in North Carolina, USA.

The short version

You can use most of Parts Builder without an account, and if you do, your carts, garage, build sheets and course progress stay in your own browser. Features such as online VIN decoding, AI search and vendor-price lookups send requests to our server and outside providers even without an account. If you give us an email address for price alerts, we store it with your watch request; unsubscribing stops alerts but does not delete that record. Signing in starts automatic sync of supported saved data to our database so you can restore it on another device. We do not sell personal information. The site includes Vercel Web Analytics for aggregate usage statistics when enabled on our hosting project, as described below.

Stored in your browser

Your garage and vehicle list, cart, wishlist, build sheets, purchase records, supplier price entries, pinned vendors, build targets, engine build progress and Electrical Academy progress are written to your browser's local storage. Supported datasets also sync when you sign in, as described below. Electrical Academy progress is currently device-local and is not included in cloud sync. Clearing browser storage deletes the local copy; it does not delete cloud backups, and data with no backup cannot be recovered by us.

Accounts and backup

Accounts are optional. Creating one stores your email address and authentication details with Supabase, which provides our database and sign-in. You can sign in with a password, a one-time emailed code, or a magic link.

When you sign in, supported browser-stored data is uploaded to our database and associated with your account, or restored to an empty browser. Later changes sync automatically. This includes your garage (including saved VINs), carts, wishlists, build sheets, purchase records, supplier prices, pinned vendors, build targets and engine-build data, but not Electrical Academy progress. Manual backup and restore controls are also available. This data is not publicly published or sold.

Price-drop alerts

When you ask to watch a part, we store the email address you give us together with the part number, its description, the catalog and vehicle it came from, the price shown at the time, and where you were on the site when you asked. This works without an account, so we may hold your email address even if you have never created one.

We use it only to email you when that part's price drops. Every alert carries a one-click unsubscribe link that marks that watch inactive and stops its alerts. The watch record, including your email address, remains in our database; contact us to request deletion. Alerts are sent through Resend, an email delivery provider.

VIN decoding

When you decode a 17-character VIN online, it is sent to our server and forwarded to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's public vPIC database, which returns the vehicle details. We keep the decoded result in a temporary server cache and reuse it for up to 24 hours. Shorter classic chassis numbers are decoded locally. The decoding endpoint does not write to our database, but a VIN you save in your garage or build sheet is included in account-linked cloud sync when you sign in.

AI search

If you use AI search, the text of your query and the catalog context needed to answer it are sent to Anthropic's API for processing. Do not enter personal information you do not want sent to a third-party provider.

Vendor pricing and outbound links

We query eBay's API for listing prices. When configured, our shopping search also sends part numbers and descriptions to SerpAPI for Google Shopping results. Parts Builder does not sell parts or process payments; when you choose to buy, we send you to a third-party vendor.

Some outbound links are affiliate links, routed through networks including Skimlinks, VigLink and Rakuten LinkSynergy, and we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Those networks can set their own cookies and can see that you followed a link from this site. Once you arrive at a vendor, that vendor's privacy policy governs anything you do there.

Cookies

If you sign in, Supabase sets cookies that keep you signed in. These are necessary for the account to work and cannot be turned off while you are signed in. Affiliate networks may set cookies when you follow an outbound link, as described above.

We do not run advertising trackers, and we do not use analytics that build a profile of you across sites.

Site usage analytics

The site includes a Vercel Web Analytics script. When enabled on our hosting project, it sends page-view information to Vercel for aggregate usage statistics, including visited URLs, referrers, approximate location, and browser and device information. Vercel documents that this service does not use third-party cookies or track visitors across different websites. See Vercel's analytics privacy information.

Who processes data for us

Vercel hosts the site, which means its servers handle requests and keep operational logs including IP addresses. Supabase provides the database and authentication. Resend delivers alert emails. Anthropic processes AI search queries. SerpAPI retrieves shopping results. NHTSA receives VINs submitted for decoding. eBay receives part-number queries for pricing.

Your choices

You can clear browser-stored data at any time from your browser settings. You can unsubscribe from a price alert using the link in any alert email. To see what we hold, correct it, or have your account and data deleted, email psapilot9022@gmail.com. Depending on where you live you may have additional rights over your personal information, including access, correction, deletion, and the right not to have it sold — we do not sell it.

Children

Parts Builder is intended for adults working on vehicles and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has given us an email address, contact us and we will delete it.

Changes

If we change what we collect or where it goes, we will update this page and the date at the top of it.
